Mathematics is often viewed as a subject that is crucial when it comes to influencing the access that students have to opportunities like science, engineering, technology, economics, and a number of other academic domains. Despite its significance, advanced mathematics and its training are not accessible for all. For a long time, unequal access to advanced level education and additional enrichment opportunities for the area of study has existed. Underserved students have struggled most to achieve success in the educational process due to a lack of academic mentorship or specially trained teachers who are available, as well as the lack of information available on scholarship programs and competitions. The above issues, if improved upon (for example, providing assistance to underserved students), can greatly improve the educational success of underserved students, thus enhancing the overall potential of these students in their area of study.
The role of mathematics in improving and elevating the educational and career outcomes of students has been highlighted by research. As per the report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the future success of students in terms of academics and economic mobility is closely linked to their strong mathematical and problem-solving skills. Despite this, it has been observed that a lot of students don’t have the access to engage with the subject outside of the classroom, specifically in areas where enrichment and advanced learning resources are limited.
For many students, mathematics is considered an unreachable subject that makes them anxious, so they lose interest even though they could succeed. To solve this issue, we need to create not only better understanding of math but also confidence in math; provide layers of assistance to understand math; and build awareness of opportunities to grow and develop in math long-term. If being able to be educated in math is more accessible to students, then they will be enabled to aspire and aim for future educational and job opportunities in that or related areas of study.
DELTA or Designing Educational Learning for Training Alliances is a social project led by students that is working towards expanding access to accelerated training in mathematics and academic opportunities for students who come from underserved backgrounds in New Haven. The initiative’s aim is to be able to provide the necessary resources, guidance, and support that is required to make advanced mathematics learning more accessible for students by way of strengthening their problem-solving skills and enabling them to pursue enrichment opportunities.
The approach adopted by the initiative groups together structured learning materials along with interactive educational experiences. This includes using worksheets, handbooks, and problem sets through which students are exposed to logical reasoning, mathematics, and analytical thinking in a way that is both engaging and approachable for them. The purpose of these resources is to inculcate confidence in the learners while at the same time also helping them in developing a deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics and other problem-solving strategies.
DELTA also aspires to raise awareness about the different kinds of paths for educational advancements that students can take up. This is done through curated information about competitions and scholarships; expert-led sessions; and provision of a digital platform that includes guided solutions, instructional videos, and interactive puzzles. In a supportive and flexible environment, DELTA seeks to combine access to opportunity with skill development and incorporates mathematics as the source of confidence-building, intellectual progress, and long-term educational mobility and sustenance.
